Summer in Sydney: What to Do Besides the Beach

Tourists from all over the world come to Sydney every year to check out the spectacular beaches. I don’t think there will be a weekend this summer that Bondi, Manly and every spot along the coast with a bit of sand isn’t packed to the rafters. So we thought, for those of you that have experienced Sydney beaches over the past few years, might want to try something else. So here is a list of things you can do this summer, besides the beach.

1. Chinatown Night Market

Starting on December 3rd and running all through the first month of this summer, Sydney’s Chinatown will be transformed into an experience highlighting the intricacies of Chinese cuisine. Chinese cuisine is more than just dumplings and yum cha, with each region of China having its rich food history. The Night Market provides the perfect opportunity to get some food in your stomach after an evening strolling through the Christmas fair at Darling Harbour, or perhaps you’re a budding foodie, looking to spice up you’re Instagram feed with some of the more interesting and adventurous dishes that are on offer at the Night Market. Let us know which dishes you’re most excited to try!

2. Le Diner en Blanc

If you’re looking for a posh experience, a nice date spot with some good food and plenty of wine to go around, make sure to book for Le Diner en Blanc this February. Originating in Paris, as I’m sure you could have assumed from the name, is a highly exclusive French dining experience curated for the true foodie. The only way to get in is to be invited by a previous member or to register on the waiting list, which is open now. Make sure to get on the curated picnic basket provided by the hosts to get the most from the evening, as well as have a look through their e-store for the various wine and champagne offers. The exact location of the event remains a mystery to us, but regardless of the location, the backdrop of a Sydney summer evening will only enhance your evening.

3. Waterworld at the Entertainment Quarter

If you’re feeling like dipping your feet in the pool rather than heading to the beach, check out Waterworld at the Entertainment Quarter this January. Starting on the 28th of December and running until the 28th of January, Waterworld heralds itself as the first mobile water amusement park. Boasting an 80-meter Epic Racer water slide and a brand new Wave Slide, Waterworld aims to be a destination for families looking for something to do with the kids this school holidays. Make sure you pre-book your tickets as well, with the pandemic still in its dying embers, we encourage all our readers to hear on FreeGuides to maintain COVID safety but also have a little fun whilst doing it. And don’t forget, slip, slap and slop because it’s raring to be a hot summer this year.

4. ELEVATE Sydney

The hottest event coming to Sydney this summer is ELEVATE Sydney. Running for the first 6 days of January, Sydneys Cahill Expressway looking over Circular Quay will be transformed into a multicultural art and music festival. Looking to explore a diverse range of artistic styles, music and sports-themed variety shows, ELEVATE seeks to express Sydney’s truly multicultural modern persona. With entertainment for the kids, as well disco’s for the parents to boogie down to, ELEVATE will be a jam-packed event for any family. Make sure to register your tickets online; even though the event is free, there are limited tickets due to COVID safe protocols. If you go, we want to hear which exhibition was your favourite!

5. Last Chance to See Hamilton

The critically acclaimed, multi tony award-winning musical from the mind of Lin Manuel Miranda is looking to wrap up its run at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney following a year of sold-out performances. The musical will be finishing up in March before heading down to Melbourne later next year, which makes it one of your last chances to check out this summer and see what all the fuss is about. As someone who’s already seen the current performance, I can tell you that you’re in for a treat, combining brilliant musical performances, engaging storytelling, and a cast who can teach you the history of a lesser-known founding father whilst still keeping you at the edge of your seat. I’d book as soon as possible for this sold out performance, as this summer serves to be your final opportunity to catch one of the most critically acclaimed musicals of the last century.
