5 Things To Do in Adelaide This Summer

Updated: Jun 27, 2022

For those planning on heading down to the wine country around Adelaide this summer, we thought we should continue our series highlighting what to do in some of Australia’s capital cities. Adelaide seems to be one of those cities that don’t come up often on peoples radars, but anyone who’s has plenty to say about the South Australian locale. If there were any options here that didn’t crack our list but made yours, let us know about it. Here at FreeGuides, we’re always keen to hear about what you think makes your city special.

Travel Through Time on a Heritage Walk

One of South Australia’s claims to fame is that it was the first city in Australia not set up as a penal colony by the British in the early colonial period. This history is something most people in South Australia are proud of, and you can glimpse a bit of this history yourself. From old Parliament House and the Townhall, as well as the heritage bridges lining the River Torrens you can see some of the monuments of this great city. With the ability to either go on a documented walking trail or create your own, there are numerous options for you to explore Adelaide’s history.

Explore the World of South Australian Street Art

Adelaide’s inner-city street art is the one competition Melbourne has in the Australian street art world. With many murals reflecting the cities deep connection with its First Nations heritage, the art can both historically, culturally and politically enrich those who seek them out. With plenty of cafes around the city centre, this provides the opportunity to enjoy a morning coffee and some incredible art before heading out on an exploration of the city for the rest of the day. Some of our favourites include Peter Rabbit, The Pantry and Bakery on O’Connel for a little sweet bite.

Cycle Your Way Through McLaren Vale

If there are two things that mix, it’s wine and bikes. Thankfully the Kuitpo Forest and the Onkaparinga River National Park provide the perfect landscape to sip some delicious reds and white with the Escape Goat Adventures Company. Not to mention with numerous lakes and rivers to dip into, the opportunity to cool off after a long ride is too good to pass off. Cycling through wine country has got to make the list of anyone visiting Adelaide, so let us know which track you guys all took, and more importantly which wines you recommend for the next group heading to McLaren Vale.

Paddle Through Adelaide Port

If you’re looking for a more active experience in Adelaide’s CBD, then I would recommend the paddle boarding tour through the port with Stand Up Paddle Boarding SA. This tour combines history and nature, as you make your way through the dolphin sanctuary whilst simultaneously hearing about the history of the area. Not to mention that at the end of your tour a pint and a meal awaits you at the Port Admiral Hotel for dinner. Alternatively, you can go on the Dolphin Sanctuary family tour, as you go on the lookout for dolphins in the mangrove creeks. Regardless of what you decide, this afternoon on the water will be something you do not want to miss out on.
